The inaugural Marin County Triathlon will be held Sunday Morning, October 26, 2008. The race begins at 8:00 am at McNears Beach County Park in San Rafael.

This is a not for profit event. ALL proceeds are being donated to charity, which include the Lupus Foundation of Northern California (balf.org), Girls on the Run of the Bay Area (gotrbayarea.org) and Jenny’s Light (jennyslight.org).

This amazing Olympic distance event will be USA Triathlon (USAT) sanctioned for professional, elite, celebrity and amateurs.

Athletes begin setting up their gear in preparation for the day in the transition area serenaded by a Parisian accordionist. This area of lawn will be cordoned off not by your typical barricades, but with living plants and rope.

There will be instructions on the rules, swim directions and a few introductions by our seasoned announcers.

Then, Grammy award winner and two-time female vocalist of the year, Laurie Lewis, and the most valuable side musician in bluegrass, Tom Rozum, will perform our nations anthem as we honor our country on what will be no doubt a very memorable day in Marin County!

Then,
a sole bagpiper will then appear and lead the athletes to the swim start and the beginning of the race, located at the very south end of the beach.

In wave starts every five minutes, professionals and elites will begin, followed by amateurs based in age group divisions. The 1.5 K swim goes out and around the pier, past the three buoys and toward the shoreline, exiting back near the transition area.

After the first transition, the 40K out and back bike ride goes up Cantera Way turning right on San Pedro Road, along the water and through China Camp State Park, turning right at Civic Center Drive and following Redwood Highway to Smith Ranch Road, turning left onto Lucas Valley Road to the 12.4 mile turnaround at approximately Westgate Drive, then returning via the same route.

Following the second transition, the 10 K run goes up a fire road and back onto North San Pedro Road turning right again. About 1.25 mile down the road will be your first aid/water station. At approximately 2.75 mile, you will be welcomed by the SF Medicine Ball Band, where you turn left crossing the road onto the Miwok Meadows fire trail road.

100 feet ahead, you'll turn left onto the Shoreline Trail for the return direction. At about mile 4.5, grab some water or Heed sports drink for the final climb of the day. When you hear Jeff Narell and the steel drums, you know you are about ready to turn left back onto the road and head back into the park for a fast downhill finish into the Green Village Expo.

We are a group of individuals whom are fortunate to be able to participate in the beauty of the outdoors, and while we enjoy our passion, we need to recognize and prove to the world that change has to happen and this is how it begins.

This will be the first major sustainable sporting event of its kind.

All of the power used for the Marin County Triathlon and Green Village Expo will be generated by solar and/or renewable energy.

All will have the opportunity to contribute to reduce our carbon efforts as well.

The Marin County Triathlon will purchase credits from a renewable energy firm to offset the carbon dioxide emissions from the event. This will help fund renewable energy, such as wind and/or methane farms, making this event carbon neutral.

In our effort to produce zero waste, our partnership with local recycling and composting agencies will be at the forefront for all involved.

This effort is the work of the entire community involved in this event.

This is living proof that we can, and must, conserve our resources.

These are just some ways we are going to make a difference.
